One of the biggest challenges for project managers or project management practitioners is to gain real-life experience in managing or working through the entire life-cycle of a project. Going through enough On-The-Job (OJT) project managing cycles is one of the critical areas for project management competencies development. However, the business and organization project assignments in the real world are not for “training” or “practicing” skills development. The project manager’s performance can often make or break the company’s business results. Thus, it is deemed necessary to have a project management “practice environment” or “training ground” to simulate a close to “real-life” project life-cycle management to close the experience gaps.
The learning objectives include:
This module aims to refresh the participants’ understanding of the project management key concepts, knowledge areas, and critical techniques and methodology in planning and to manage the respective phases in a project life-cycle.
This module provides an overview of the board game structure, introduces the playing rules, roles, and methods, and aligns the participants to the game simulation objectives and desired outcomes. A play-simulation case example will be used to fast-track the participants’ learning of the game.
An entry-level round of play using a custom-made case allows players to get familiar with the game and to practice and refresh their project life-cycle managing skills in an interactive team setting.
A competency polishing round of play using a custom-made case allows players to pick up the lessons learned from Game 1 and improve their project life-cycle management skills through active discussions and reviews in a team setting.
A showcase round of play using a custom-made case allows players to demonstrate the best practices acquired from Games 1 and 2. The players will have the opportunities to challenge for the best project outcomes through active brainstorming, creative actions, and a goal-driven decision-making process in a team setting.
The 3Rs session is to allow the players and the team to Relate, Reflect, and Realize the board game plays experiences, identify the skills gaps, and put the learning of the best practices into actions.
This workshop-based course uses the board game from PMZONE® to simulate the project management practices based on PMBOK® Guide from the Project Management Institute, www.pmi.org. Classroom training, exercises, industry-tailored game-based case studies, hands-on game plays, and experience sharing are included to impress learning.
